Inspired by the cave paintings from Lascaux (in France) and the Biblical creation story, I have been working on a creation story told on Stegosaurus plates. First, I sculpted the plates in varying size according to the skeletal model of Stegosaurus ungulatus (for more info visit http://www.carnegiemnh.org/online/dinosaurs/stego saurus.html). To obtain the bony texture, I scraped down the plates with my fingers, pushing extra clay lumps to the bottom, and- after the clay became leather hard- smoothed the sharp edges with a wet sponge. After the plates dried to a stable condition, I carved images on each of them- referring to several different ancient art styles. To connect all tiles, I added a dashed, decorative border. After bisque firing, I mixed a black underglaze with water (60% water, 40% glaze) and painted the tiles. After the paint dried, I wiped off the excess glaze with a sponge and exposed the image. The tiles will be hung on the wall in an arch matching that of the dinosaur's skeleton.
